Space Heaters PDF Print E-mail
According to the Home Safety Council, 67% of American households use gas, wood, kerosene, coal, or fuel as their major heating source. All these heat sources release carbon monoxide when burned and have caused more than 100,000 medical visits and 300 home poisoning deaths each year. Improper equipment servicing and lack of detectors are the major causes of these injuries or deaths.
  • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • If using a kerosene heater, be aware that it should always be used in a well ventilated room. Kerosene heaters consume oxygen as they burn and can produce dangerous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide.
  • READ ALL manufacturers instructions and warnings.
  • Make sure children and pets are supervised at all times when a portable space heater is in use.
  • Use proper fuel in kerosene space heaters
  • Avoid using space heaters to dry wet clothing, blankets, etc.
  • Keep the heater at least 3 feet from all flammable objects (this includes curtains, furniture, bedding, etc.)
  • Do not use heater in bathroom or outdoors unless it is specifically designed for this use.
  • Moisture may damage heater and cause a fire or shock.
  • Always keep heater on a level, flat surface. Do not place on a chair or furniture as it may fall.
  • Place cords on top of rugs or floors as putting anything on top of cord may damage it.
  • NEVER place a space heater in a child’s room unless constant supervision is possible.
  • Unless absolutely necessary, do not use an extension cord with a space heater, as it may cause overheating.
