Next to proper installation, proper maintenance is the most important safety measure you can take. Below are several tips for the safe, enjoyable use of a wood burning stove.
  • Avoid creosote buildup. This black, tarry substance occurs when there is an incomplete burning of wood. Creosote can build up on the inside of chimneys and stovepipes and can ignite, causing an extremely hot and dangerous fire. It is important for you to have your stovepipes and chimney checked and cleaned frequently.*
  • To prevent sparks from landing on your roof, use an “all weather” flue cap with a spark arrestor on your chimney.
  • Always maintain adequate air circulation when your stove is in use. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are produced when burning wood.
  • Follow the spacing guidelines that come with your stove to insure safe distances between your stove and surrounding walls and furniture.
  • Don’t use flammable liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, or charcoal starter to start your fire.
  • Avoid burning garbage in your wood burning stove.
  • Install smoke detectors in all bedrooms, and on all house levels.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near the stove.
  • Have your stove and chimney inspected and cleaned periodically by a professional.
  • Dispose of ashes properly and carefully. Always put ashes in a covered metal container and store on non-combustible material away from the stove – preferably outside, away from the house.

To avoid creosote buildup, follow these steps:

  • Burn dry, well seasoned hard woods (avoid burning green or wet wood)
  • Don’t burn wood slowly for long periods of time.
  • Maintain a hot burning fire for at least 15-20 minutes each day during the months your stove is in use.
  • Have the chimney cleaned whenever the creosote becomes ¼” thick. If using a wood stove for a primary heat source, or burning wet or unseasoned wood, you may need to have your chimney/stovepipe cleaned two to four times a year.
